2015 Workshop
BEGINNING CLOWNING: Led by members of Passado Action Theatre, this workshop introduces beginning actors to some basic techniques of European Clowning. These techniques can be used to help the actor lose their self-consciousness and as tools to help create comedic characters. Open to upper elementary. www.passadoactiontheatre.com
BEGINNING STAGE COMBAT: Actors from Passado Action Theatre will use the techniques of Action Theatre to address the basics of stage combat for the stage. We will cover SAFETY, BEGINNING HAND TO HAND, VICTIM MOTIVATED ACTION and answer the question: "Should we portray violence on the stage when there is so much violence all around us." HIP HOP FUNDAMENTALS: Dancer/Choreographer Ali Grey will lead a workshop focused on the building blocks of Hip Hop dance. Students will work on the fundamentals that include musicality, self-expression, and connection! Get ready to groove and have a good time! Open to middle and high school. www.versastyledance.com
SOUND: Nick Hall and Luis Alarcon of Outstanding Pro will demonstrate the ins and outs of running sound for bands. Perfect for musicians and those interested in the technical side of performance. Open to middle and high school (100 people).http://outstandingpro.com
WONDROUS WATERCOLOR PAINTINGS: Teaching artists Lorraine Cleary Dale and Onya Hogan-Finlay from the Armory Center of the Arts will help participants discover Native American plants with a magnifying glass, paintbrush, watercolor and ink in this hands-on workshop. Also on display will be artwork created by 4th grade students from Malabar and Second St. schools from the NEW Artful Connections with science program. IMPROVISATION: Led by actress/teacher Jill Holden, (Pretty Little Liars) this session will be filled with improv games chosen to delight students up to 6th grade. Open to elementary only.
WEST AFRICAN DRUMMING: The Music Center sponsors musician Andrew Grueschow in this exciting workshop. Participants will use traditional instruments to play rhythms from the Ewe speaking people of Ghana, West Africa. Songs, movement, and cultural connections will further our musical experience, and connect us to the culture of Ghana. Open to all ages. www.MusicCenter.org
ACTING SHAKESPEARE: A Noise Within actors Jeremy Rabb and Saundra Montijo will work with students using the witch's scene from MacBeth to explore the concept of character. Students will play with extreme physical and vocal choices. Open to middle and high school. www.aNoiseWithin.org
CHALK ART: Artist/Teacher Pablo Oliveros will facilitate the ever-popular Chalk Art section of the Festival. We supply the chalk and pavement, you supply the creativity! Open to all ages.
ART GALLERY WALK: Students will explore contemporary art practices through the observation of student generated art. Led by a docent students will learn to observe, interpret and make connections with the visual art on display. Open to all ages.
WAACKING (Dance): Dancer Anthony Berry will be going over the foundation and the techniques of a dance style known as Waacking, in addition to the history behind the movement. The workshop will end with a choreographed combination. Open to the upper elementary through high school. www.versastyledance.com
SPECIAL EFFECTS STAGE MAKE-UP: Professional stage make-up artist Carla Copley will first inspire the participants by showing photographic images from a Mood Board, and then she will show how to turn them from 1 dimension into a real life 3D art form. In addition, the participants will learn how to use everyday home materials to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary blood and Zombie Apocalypse. Open to all ages.
OIL PASTELS (Art): Artist/Teacher Celeste Bauer DeCoudres will help aspiring artists learn how to use oil pastels through the practice of landscape drawings and others genres in art. Open to all ages.
EASTSIDE FEST SONG SHARE: Musician/teacher Sarah Truher invites you to join the Chorus! You will practice good singing technique and learn how to blend your voice with others as we master a popular song by a prominent local songwriter. Participants will even have the opportunity to compose new lyrics and sing short solos, as time permits! All ages welcome and encouraged to join the fun!.
